The Rainbow Shark (Epalzeorhynchos frenatum) is a striking freshwater species native to the rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia. Despite its name, it is not a true shark but a member of the Cyprinidae family. Known for its vibrant red or orange-colored tail and fins, the Rainbow Shark is a popular aquarium fish due to its active and territorial nature. Males tend to display more vibrant colors, especially during the breeding season, which is one of the reasons why this species is prized by aquarists.

In the wild, Rainbow Sharks are found in fast-moving streams and rivers with rocky or sandy bottoms. These conditions should be mimicked in an aquarium, with well-filtered water and plenty of open swimming space. The Rainbow Shark can grow up to 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) long, so it requires a minimum tank size of 55 gallons (208 liters) to thrive. The tank should have areas of hiding spots and live plants to allow the fish to retreat and feel secure, as they can become territorial, especially as they mature.

As an omnivore, the Rainbow Shark thrives on a varied diet, including high-quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. It is also known to nibble on algae, which makes it a useful addition to aquariums that may suffer from algae overgrowth. A varied diet that includes vegetable matter will ensure a balanced intake of nutrients.

Rainbow Sharks are territorial, and it is recommended to keep them as the sole species of their kind in a tank. They may show aggression toward other fish, particularly those with similar body shapes or colorful features, so choosing peaceful tankmates is essential. They do well with larger, non-aggressive species such as tetras or danios but should be kept in a tank with plenty of hiding spaces to reduce stress and minimize aggression.

Maintaining stable water conditions is crucial to the Rainbow Shark’s health. The recommended temperature range is between 74°F and 79°F (23-26°C), and the pH should be kept between 6.5 and 8.0. They are relatively hardy, but water changes should be conducted regularly to ensure clean water, and good filtration is necessary.

The Rainbow Shark is an engaging and colorful addition to a well-maintained freshwater aquarium. While they can be territorial, their bright colors and active nature make them a great choice for aquarists with the appropriate tank size and setup. Due to their territorial nature, it's essential to avoid overcrowding, as they can become aggressive, particularly if they feel their space is threatened.
